FLY FISHING FOR SEARUN CUTTHROAT TROUT
When the first rains fall in September a strong push of chrome bright 13-18 inch searun cutthroat trout enter my favorite coastal streams. It is a wonderful time to float in the Clackacraft (see Clackacraft.com) and cast to pods of these aggressive fish. When the spring Chinook are spawning, schools of searuns stack up below the reeds to feed on the spawn. The fishing can be phenomenal.
The window of opportunity for this fishery is small. When the first high water of October hits, these fish vanish. Searun Cutthroats are truly ghost like.
I provide a deli lunch, hot coffee and water. Bring what you prefer to drink and snack on. Plan on shallow wading and casting from the boat.
Mid September though mid October
EQUIPMENT FOR SEARUN CUTTHROAT
A nine foot 5 weight is the perfect rod for these acrobatic and aggressive cutts. Bring a floating line for the 5 weight and if you have it, a 7 weight to cast 10 foot sink tips in type 3 and 6 density. There is also a very good chance to hook up with a summer run steelhead or two. 3x is about right for tippet size for the cutts but use 1x for added insurance when that steelhead takes your fly. (see www.Sageflyfish.com)
I will provide the flies if you choose. I have developed a series of very effective patterns but they are not available commercially. However, a Borden Special in a size 8 and 10 is very effective.
Breathable stocking foot waders and a good raincoat are necessary. The weather is variable this time of year so come prepared for warm sunny days and the occasional rainsquall.
