FLY FISHING IN OREGON
In Oregon, we are blessed to have relatively healthy runs of wild steelhead in seven rivers within two hours of Portland. The trout populations appear stable and the fishing opportunities for them are endless. Rivers called Nestucca, McKenzie, Santiam, Trask, Nehalem, Clackamas are my home waters and I look forward to taking you to them.
My programs are fly-fishing only, catch and release of all wild fish. If you would like to keep a hatchery fish, that's what they're there for. Science supports the removal of hatchery fish from wild fish environments so that choice is yours.
After thirty years of time on the water, I believe that a down stream and across presentation for steelhead is the most enjoyable method to apply. The grab is what steelhead fishing is all about and whether you cast a floating line or high density sink tip, that moment when the fish stops the fly and the line comes tight under your finger is what we live for. For steelhead, I prefer Spey rods with short, Skagit style shooting heads and my custom flies. Click on Fly Fishing for Winter Steelhead for more info.
The trout fishing in western Oregon is focused primarily on resident and sea run cutthroat trout. The McKenzie River hosts resident wild rainbow trout as do other Willamette Valley streams, but the main event here is the cutthroat. Plan on dry fly, wet fly and streamer fishing for trout in Oregon. Click on Fly Fishing for Searun Cutthroat or Fly Fishing for Rainbow Trout for more info.
Last fall I spent one perfect afternoon on my favorite coast river when the searun cutthroat were so abundant, feeding on eggs behind spawning Chinook, that I believe I could have landed fifty or more trout. They came to the fly on nearly every cast. It is amazing that this opportunity exists within 2 hours of a major metropolitan center.
Please choose a program from the menu bar. If you have additional questions I encourage you to email me. Feel free to wander through my photo site as well. There are some dandy's in there.
Hope to spend a day on the river with you soon.
