FLY FISHING FOR RAINBOW TROUT

Native rainbow trout in the Willamette Valley are most abundant on the famous McKenzie River, a short 2-hour drive from Portland.   This beautiful river is best experienced from the comfort of my 16-foot, Clackacraft Drift boat (see Clackacraft.com). As you float beneath tall cottonwoods, cedars and firs, a cast presented tight to the bank could reward you with a heavily spotted 17-inch wild rainbow. I cover miles of river in a day's float, however, there will be the occasional spot and stalk fishing too.   It's a total trout fishing experience where the fish range from 10-18 inches with the occasional summer steelhead interrupting your day.

I provide a deli lunch, hot coffee and water. Bring what you prefer to snack on and drink. Plan on shallow wading and casting from the boat.

SEASON

Mid March though mid October

EQUIPMENT FOR RAINBOW AND CUTTROAT TROUT

Rods and Lines:

A nine foot 5 weight is the perfect rod. A Sage 590 TCR or 590 SLT are great choices. (see www.Sageflyfish.com) Bring a floating line for the 5 weight and if you have it, a 6 or 7 weight to cast 10 foot sink tips in type 3 and type 6 density. There is also a very good chance to hook up with a summer run steelhead or two. 5x and 6x is about the right tippet size for the rainbows and cutts but use 1x-3x when fishing streamers for added insurance when that steelhead takes your fly.

Flies:

Fill your box with a wide selection of Hare's ear nymphs size 12-16, Pheasant tail nymphs size 14-18, soft hackles in various colors size 12-18, Woolybuggers in olive, black and brown, PMD dries size 14 and 16, McKenzie Caddis size 14 and 16, and whatever else you would like to try.   Copper Johns work great too.   Please feel free to mail me directly or call Kaufmann's Streamborn fly shop for more details @ 503-639- 6400.   Tell them I sent you.

Clothing:

Breathable stocking foot waders and a good raincoat are necessary.   Oregon weather is variable, even in mid-summer, so come prepared for warm sunny days and the occasional rainsquall.
